New South Wales Training Day November 2007

The training will be held on Monday 19th November 2007, the day after the states. Those willing to stay on a little longer at Soldiers Point can treat themselves to an extra day of on-water bliss under the tutilage of Bob Foster. Boats are to be rigged and ready by 10am.

The format/focus of the day will be decided according to Bob's observations of the participant's strengths and weaknesses as demonstrated in the four races of the states. It would be much appreciated if all participants could contribute $5 toward costs of putting the coach boat on the water for the day. Lunch will be BYO. It may be wise to prepare to eat/drink on the water.

If you have further queries please contact me.

Cheers, Paul Foster. Email: paulyfoster@bigpond.com

Toby suffers humiliating defeat

Traveller's Trophy heat 7 was held on March 10 & 11 at Oak Flats on Lake Illawarra. This event saw the national champ suffer a demoralising defeat. In a reversal of the recent nationals result Paul won 3 of 4 heats of the Oak Flats regatta to relegate the champ to runner-up. Toby was only able to win a race when Paul broke the start and had to return. At one stage Toby was embarassingly seen to fake severe cramping while being overtaken. Arie and Bob also had some good racing with new comer Dave O'Donnell drafted from the OK dinghy fleet. Dave provided an excellent spectacle by capsizing 277 (which had been borrowed from Paul) on the start line and righting it without any battens left in the sail. The lake was a fantastic venue for Impulse sailing and will be visited again in the future. The only shame for the club was that aside from the 5 Impulses only 2 other boats showed up. In taking out overall honors for the regatta Paul's skill was only matched by his humility.

The big fleet at Oak Flats

2006/07 NSW Titles

A NSW fleet reduced by the unavailability of many skippers was this year bolstered by two interstate visitors, two new members and the return of the prodigal son. Nine skippers competed for the NSW Impulse championships sailed in conjunction with the Jervis Bay long weekend regatta over the first weekend in October.

Glenn Bond showed a clean pair of heels to win the series carrying three bullets with Alan Young pipping Paul Foster for second on count back after both had heat wins.

The first day saw two heats sailed after a 35 knot southerly eased to 15 knots with a lumpy sea swell. The second day saw the morning race sailed in a flat water, offshore, 10 knotter. In the afternoon the sea breeze smoked in to 25 knots at times from the NE for the final heats.

The series was a success sailed in challenging wind and waves under a clear blue sky. No dolphins were seen this year although the water remained crystal clear and the beaches pearly white. Sailing among a 95 boat, mixed fleet superbly coordinated by the J-Bay SC was an excellent opportunity to promote the class particularly with the top two Impulses coming first and third overall on yardstick. Well done Glenn and Alan.

There was much exchanging of ideas around the barbie and in between races. Debriefing was aided by Chris’s slide shows of a night. It is hoped that the interstate boys found the experience worthwhile and will be taking a few tips home. It was great to see Chris McCrann and Damien West making the trip and special thanks goes to class photographer Jessica Kidd who did a great job of taking the photos on the water.

A warm welcome is extended to new members Andrew Foster and Ian Young who competed strongly in the series despite their relative inexperience in the class. It was also great to see Ash Reeves return to the fold as he sailed Tim Frew’s boat with distinction.

We hope to see a few more regulars return for next season’s series along with the travellers who added to the spirit of the weekend tremendously.

Where is the accommodation?
The park is at the end of Myola Rd, Myola, down near the water. See attached diagram.
The following address has all the details:
www.jervisbaytouristpark.com.au/index.html

When to get there?
Accommodation at the Myola Tourist Park has been booked for the Fri, Sat & Sun nights.
Paul, Andrew, Damien & David will all be arriving Friday afternoon and will either be at the club unloading boats or at the park checking in. If you get there first the cabins are booked under Foster.

Cost of accommodation?
All original quoted prices depended on all beds being filled & whether you were staying in the deluxe accom with the aristocracy or in the slum with the gromets.
At this point in time all single bunks have been filled but there is still a spare double bed in each of the two cabins empty. Every attempt will be made to ensure that people pay the lowest amount of $$$ possible. The maximum cost for the ensuite cabin will be $120 per person for the weekend. While the maximum cost likely for the bunkhouse will be $70. If anyone has a preference as to which cabin they stay in please e-mail me.

What to bring?
Blankets/quilts will be provided. Everyone will need to supply their own towels and sheets.

How to get there?
For those travelling down from the north the new M7 motorway cuts out 48 sets of traffic lights and should see you drive much of the way thru western Sydney without having to touch the break pads.

    - Follow the F3 fwy from Newcastle to it's end and flow onto Pennant Hills Rd.

    - Turn right off PH Rd onto the M2 motorway which turns into the M7 motorway. The M7 is electronically tolled by E-pay
so you will not have to stop at any toll booths.

    - Turn right at end of M7 onto the Hume/South West Hwy.

    - Follow this toward Mittagong and Bowral.

    - Turn left off the Hwy at Bowral and down the hill thru Kangaroo Valley toward Nowra.

    - From Nowra follow the signs to Jervis Bay and then Callala.

You will need to pre book your e-pass either by phone or via website in September (within 30 days of use).

Ph: 13 86 55

Website: www.westlinkm7.com.au/
click on: roam.com.au at bottom of page
click on: "More" under payment options
click on; "Open a Visitor's e-pass" after - Visiting Sydney?

You will need to supply credit card details with both of these options.

For those Vic's coming up it's the Princes Hwy all the way!

Who is eligible to win the title?
Although not mentioned in the NOR all entrants have equal claim to winning the regatta. However, the title (and trophy) of NSW Champion will be awarded to the highest placed NSW resident.
